About Richard Mitchell
Welcome to the Milky Way Gallery, an online art gallery based in North Yorkshire. I am Richard Mitchell, an oil painter who specializes in figurative art. I prefer pictures with people, ranging from portraits to crowd scenes, though I cover an eclectic mix of different subjects, including marine pictures and still life. I've done a few commissions which involved copying masterworks, such as Van Gogh’s ‘The Mulberry Tree’. I exhibited long ago in the nineties, then after a substantial gap I retired from corporate life and I am showing pictures again. I previously exhibited in the south of England, but now I live in the breathtaking landscape of North Yorkshire, near the town of Selby, and I have joined with other local artists to form the Selby Art Collective. I have sold my work in the USA and Germany as well as England.
I am also an author of art-crime and art-mystery fiction. You can examine my novels, Stealing Venus and Painting Venus, in the Books section. The first is a thriller about art forgery, and the sequel is a contemporary/ historical art mystery which explores Botticelli's muse. Samples of both novels are available for you to peruse.
