Every year there used to be a festival of music at Cliveden, a huge stately home near us. Hundreds of people used to go, and picnic in the Italian Gardens in front of the house. Some had long tables laid with candles, and would sit there in evening dress, eating smoked salmon and sipping champagne. Children threaded excitedly through the crowd. I caught these two long-lost friends greeting each other, kissing in the air.
